ReMain

First built as a private home in the 1870s, the building at 22 Federal Street (and its iconic side porch) changed colors and owners many times over the last 140 years. By 2013, the building had been decommissioned as a town office due to falling ceilings and unsafe conditions. With peeling paint and no shutters, a casual passerby would have struggled to imagine a brighter future for this forgotten survivor amidst the Colonial, Federal, and Greek Revival splendor of its downtown neighbors.

ReMain Ventures, an organization which seeks to spark for-profit innovation and create jobs that enhance the health of the year-round community, purchased the then-abandoned building at public auction in 2014. Like other ReMain projects, the goal for this historic downtown building was to restore its exterior (including the classic green shutters), stabilize it structurally, improve its energy profile and performance, and create spaces to lease to the businesses and non-profits that could contribute to the vibrant street life of downtown Nantucket. The result was a highly-functional space that could become a year-round culinary destination and a gathering place for the island community.

Our story, and the story of Nantucket Culinary, would never have been possible without the work of ReMain Ventures. We invite you to learn more about their work and the redevelopment of our landmark building.
